about

To commemorate its 10-year recording anniversary, the title track of Deborah's first full-length record is given a make-over by Mike Stevens at Lost Monkey Studio with drum loops, synth bass and keyboards.

lyrics

I can see you standing by the doorway
barefoot and angry and graceful all the same
you knew things then I couldn't yet tell
the touch of earth
and music always filled your house
and I remembered there about living
and though the past is just the past
I've gone back to that old fire

I'm adding water to the ashes
I've made a cross out of our love
I'm smudging my forehead to erase my doubt
I'm adding water to the ashes

sometimes a candle is all you need
the cry of a rooster a marigold seed
the belief in something being born anew
though I grope and I totter
and I'm my father's daughter
you loved me well
knowing the damage

I'm adding water to the ashes
I've made a cross out of our love
I'm smudging my forehead to erase my doubt
I'm adding water to the ashes

you taught me something I won't ever forget
how to find God in my darkest night
that don't mean it don't come back around
that don't mean I'm not living without fright

I knew better than to ask you to stay
I knew you liked to ride away
the ocean by your side and wind in your face
free
but if I could I'd be right there by
clinging tight without any pride
just to be close to your embers
but that is yesterday now

I'm adding water to the ashes
I've made a cross out of our love
I'm smudging my forehead to erase my doubt
I'm adding water to the ashes
